With its inauguration on 31st October 2018, the Statue of Unity near Kevadiya, Gujarat has been garnering tourists from all across the world. With an average footfall of 15,000 visitors a day, it has surpassed the footfall of The Statue of Liberty which gets an average footfall of 10,000 tourists a day on average. 

Boasting a whopping height of 182 metres, surpassing China’s Spring Temple Buddha of 153 metres, the Statue of Unity is the world’s tallest statue and was built as a patriotic ode to the Iron Man of India- Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Vallabhbhai Patel has had a big hand in the unification of the 562 princely states of the country to constitute the Republic of India. Part of the reason the statue is named “The Statue of Unity”.

Ways To Reach

Train– If you’re planning on to coming by train, the nearest station is Kevadiya. And there are free of cost AC buses plying from Kevadiya Station to the Statue of Unity monument complex.

Air– The nearest airport to the statue is that of Vadodara’s, and you can choose between a taxi or bus to reach which should take around 2 to 3.5 hours.

Vadodara Airport is Gujarat’s 3rd busiest airport and is very well connected to international as well as domestic cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru.

Road- The Statue of Unity is just 3.5 km from a small town called Kevadiya. And around 25 km from the nearest city Rajpipla, 90 km from Vadodara, 150 km from Surat, and 200 km from Ahmedabad. Ahmedabad and Surat just being a few hundred kilometres away, both of the cities are a 3-hour one-way drive.

Accommodation

Since it’s not been a long time since the inauguration of the statue, the surrounding town/city hasn’t developed that much in terms of providing accommodation and hospitality. Having said that all is not bad as there are a few hotels around the Statue of Unity complex that can provide a decent to good staying experience.

Children Nutrition Park- The Children Nutrition Park is the world’s first technologically driven park with the vision and objective to instill healthy eating habits amongst children and make them understand the role of nutrition in their mental and physical growth. A toy train named Nutri Express runs through five stations, a gaming zone and a tunnel emphasizing the theme of nutrition alongside entertaining the children.

Valley of Flowers- The Valley of Flowers is a 17 km long patch of colourful flowers along the banks of river Narmada to make the spot resemble a rainbow of flowers set up on Earth. It houses around 100 varieties of flowers like Garmado, Gulmohar, Champo, Khakhro, Pongaro, shrubs like Galtora, Tecoma, Nerium and climbers like Qualisis, Wadeliya, Allamandacathartica and bamboos and colourful grasses. Because of the larval host plants and nectar plants in the garden, a whopping 80 species of butterflies are found. In addition to all of this, two beautiful lakes- Kamal and Poyani are also developed.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel served as independent India’s first home minister and first deputy Prime Minister. He played an extremely important role in integrating over 500 princely states with the union of India, and is, therefore, called as the ‘Iron Man’ of India
